To most of you, I am not a real DJ.

And that is true.

I’m justa numbnut sitting behind a keyboard with a list of songs that I play. Nothing more, nothing less.

But instead of just sitting at home playing to a few people in Second Life, and almost no one on justaradio.net, I’m about to head out into the world that I do not particularly like and put on small pop-up music events.

For one reason only.

To bring people together.

They can sit and listen. They can dance a little. They can talk to someone. They can stay for ten minutes or stay for hours. It does not really matter.

What matters is that, for a while, they are part of something.

And this is what I want you to do too.

If you are a DJ, you already have something that can bring people together. You have the music, the knowledge, the equipment, the personality and, most importantly, the ability to create an atmosphere where people can simply be.

So take it somewhere it normally would not go.

Play for people who could never afford to hear you in a club or bar.

Play for people who would never feel comfortable walking through the door of one.

Play at a community centre, a retirement village, a park, a small hall, a support service, a neighbourhood gathering, or anywhere else where a bit of music might turn an ordinary afternoon into something people remember.

It does not have to be a huge event.

It does not have to have lights, smoke machines, expensive sound systems or hundreds of people.

Sometimes a speaker, some music and a handful of people enjoying themselves is enough.

And you do not have to do it for justa.

You do not have to wear our name, promote our charity or ask anyone for anything.

Just do it because you can.

There are people everywhere who are isolated, lonely, struggling, short of money, lacking confidence, or simply disconnected from the world around them.

Music will not solve all of that.

But for an hour or two, it can give people somewhere to be.

Someone to talk to.

Something to smile about.

Maybe even a reason to come back next time.

That is worth doing.

So if you are a DJ who normally plays clubs, bars, radio, online, festivals, weddings, Second Life or anywhere else, I am asking you to occasionally take what you do outside your normal world.

Find a few people who could use it.

Turn up.

Press play.

And see what happens.

You might discover that the smallest crowd you ever play for becomes one of the most worthwhile.
